5 Tips for Moving from Surviving to Thriving

I’m often asked about how I managed to go from surviving to thriving after my accident and if I would share my strategy.  Below are some steps that have helped me get to where I am today.

5 Tips for moving from surviving to thriving …

1.       Let yourself mourn
The person you were is no more and it’s ok to grieve the loss of that self, just as you would at the ending of a relationship or loss of a loved one.

2.       Accept your current reality
We have no control over what happens to us – but we can choose how we let it affect us. Acceptance does not mean that you are OK with it – it just means that you acknowledge things are different and this frees you to start moving forward.

3.        Learn to like yourself
Yes, the person in the mirror may seem like a stranger looking back at you – but it’s you! Stop focusing on who you no longer are - what you can no longer do AND start focusing on all the awesomeness that is you.

4.       Rediscover who you used to be
Before life sent you on a detour you enjoyed life – discover new ways to bring some of that joy back into your life.

5.       Start Dreaming
When you begin to dream about how you want your life to be you are creating positive thoughts that go out into the universe and manifest into dream life.

Though everyone’s life detour story is different (perhaps it was a divorce, loss of a loved one, an illness or life altering accident) and is often difficult and unwelcome, a life detour can hold a silver lining- the opportunity to create a new you and life.

I hope the above tips will inspire you to take the next step towards moving from simply surviving to THRIVING!

Would love for you to share your tips on how you moved
from surviving to thriving after your life detour.

Love and Peace,

Is there Life After Trauma, Brain Injury?

Yes... there is LIFE after Trauma and Brain Injury! I'm living proof.
Though the journey to creating a new you and life that fit together may be bumping at times, I know with determination, patience, and a positive attitude - anything is possible.

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I'm

possible’!”Audrey Hepburn

Physical injuries can be seen and taken care of. Broken bones heal, but a closed head injury is an unseen injury and there are no drugs or techniques that can cure a brain injury, prevention is the only cure.

When the brain is injured, it can affect the core of the person, ~ personality, memory, information processing, emotional and behavioral controls.

Family members, friends, co-workers and employers are often unable to understand or sympathize, as the person living with a brain injury may often look physically fine and may even appear healthy and "normal" during casual interaction. This false outward appearance causes a disconnected (as the brain injury cannot be seen, like a physical injury can) between the person with the brain injury and those who are suppose to be their care and support system.
This disconnect can expand into debilitating and frustrating obstacles for the person with a brain injury. Impacting their quality of life, affecting relationships, career, financial stability and most importantly their self-esteem.

Whether you or a loved one is living with a brain injury, I hope that you will find my posts about Life After Trauma & Brain Injury? helpful, motivating, funny at times and inspiring. Most of all I hope that you will realize YOU are NOT ALONE! Nor are you crazy, it's a brain injury not insanity (though it may feel like at times..).

Remember, I have and continue to walk the same path you are Creating Me and a Life, after all my careful life plans, dreams were brought to an immediate halt, by a driver who didn't see me crossing a street.

Are you, a friend or loved facing life after brain injury or traumatic event in life?

Email me any questions you may have about my journey to picking up the pieces and creating a new life where I'm at Peace & Thriving.  Hello@HighHeeledLife.com

Change is in the Air...

Change is something that forces us from our comfort zone.

Change may not always be something we  initiated, and often
blind sides us. But we can can take back control - by finding the opportunity(ies) in change instead of letting it (change) take us down.

Change comes with its own built in grieving/adjustment period and the length of this period is as individual as we are. I have come to refer to this time as "Life in Transition". Life as we knew it or the person we were no longer fit - in the present; and the future is unknown.

Change makes us look deep within ourselves and find strength we did not know existed. With this strength guiding us we are able to do our personal best and than some.

Until we are ready to move forward, it may feel that we have been defeated by change. But this feeling will pass and we will conquer change. For one thing is constant with change ... IT will always be there urging us towards our life's purpose. Often in ways that we could not have imagined.

Change is won when during our "Life in Transition" period we find our self going from surviving to Thriving; the choice to move towards Thriving is ours.

As the plantings of summer make way for the harvest of autumn, it is the perfect time to look at what changes have been planted in our life and start harvesting the opportunities instead of focusing on the weeds that may also have taken root!

For me post accident, I have found the opportunity of giving to others, by sharing my story and journey.

What opportunities have you found within changes in your life, that at first you thought there could be no good in it?
