Celia in the City: Riverside - Flower Market & Bonjour Brioche

We have been enjoying some fabulous warm temperatures in Toronto (in between the still lingering unseasonable cool days) and May 9th was perfect for getting out and exploring the city. Though the temperatures were cooperating the weather gal suggested we could expect small bursts of rain. I decided to stay close to home and see what was happening in Riverside. This little neighbourhood spans only 10 blocks along Queen Street East ( between the Don Valley to the west and Degrassi street to east) but has many wonderful gems to be discovered. Easily accessed by street car. My trip today was all about the Toronto Flower Market.

The Toronto Flower Market -  had it's season opening day just before Mother's Day. This year's market is located at 659 Queen Street East and if you missed their opening on May 9th - be sure to mark your calender  as there are only 5 more market days this season:
June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12 and October 10.

What I loved about the market was that it reminded of the flower markets in Europe and the flowers are Ontario grown!!! I'm already looking forward to June's market.

If you follow along on Instagram you will have already seen the beauties that I scored!!
To learn more about the Toronto Flower Market and for great tips on caring for your flowers visit their FaceBook Page.

This little canvas cross-body bag, I picked up at a Paris market in 2010, is perfect for keeping my hands free while I'm out exploring the city.

Relaxed ...

On Mother's Day Mr. G and I enjoyed a fabulous brunch at Bonjour Brioche
And of course one does get hungry when exploring. My fav spot to stop and enjoy some wonderful eats is at Bonjour Brioche - you will find it just east of the market on the north side (just before the train bridge over-pass at Degrassi). I've shared about this little French patisserie gem here .

And no brunch at Bonjour Brioche is complete without a treat from the patisserie tray ...

How clever and beautiful is this display of flowers??? ...
I will be checking out this eatery next time I'm in Riverside.

and of course comfy walking shoes ...

A Book, Cup of Tea & some Fashion ...

Being in the city has many perks ... like getting out of the staple of yoga pants and khakis of country life and slipping on some heels and real pants!
(L) Mr. G. (Centre) Celia M. (R) - Peter Rattan
Mr. G. and I recently had the pleasure of attending a book launch for Caron Leid, hosted by our dear friend Peter Rattan - Founder & Creative Director of räh - rattan art house .
For my tea loving readers ... I'm going to steep a cup of tea using tea that was in the gratitude bags given out at the launch along with some others wonderful goodies.

I have shared this tea cup before ... but thought it was perfect for today's tea. It is Spice of Life by Judith Glover and the theme always brightens my day. It's also a generous size cup so perfect for enjoying this delicious tea.

The tea is called Margaret's Hope - Darjeeling tea... a delicate tending astringent cup with the distinctive "Muscatel' character with hints of currant an almost wine like taste. - black tea. (as per the tag) -

I would have to agree...it is divine!

Now that we have our tea let's go to the party...

This is Caron's first book and it chronicles her journey into the world of Alzheimer's with her mother. Caron takes you through first learning of her mother's disease; navigating the care system; dealing with personal care workers; holding onto to her sanity and finally coming to acceptance of the path she was now on. Through each page you can feel the love, care and respect Caron has for her mother.
You will also find a great list of resources of Alzheimer's societies  around the world and detailed accounts of the treatments her mother faced.

A most touching story that I recommend anyone who has a loved one facing Alzheimer's read. This is also a great gift for anyone who has a friend or family member facing Alzheimer's.

To learn more about Caron or to order her book I invite you to visit her website Caron Leid . Her book is also available through Barnes & Noble - in both hard and soft cover.

The event was held in the Distillery District and it was well attended ...

It was an amazing evening!!! ... and the cupcakes ...lets just say I wish I had one to accompany my tea this afternoon!! Tres YUMMY!!

Now for my fashionista readers ... This is what I wore...

White Burberry pant (Holt's a few seasons ago); black silk blouse from Femme de Carrier - (Vaughan Mills almost 6 years ago) and Gucci heels (Holt's gift from the furbabies at Christmas couple years back )!! ... I love the pocket detail and button on the Burberry pant..

These heels are more comfy than they appear!!!

and perfect for summer fun...

Caron Leid (L) in a gorgeous white pant suit ...and Caroline (R) MC for the evening ... I must find out where her dress is from ... she looked tres chic and I love how she pair the over the knee boot with her dress ...

With Love and Gratitude,

Rediscovering Toronto and its little gems ~ Globe Bistro

Since making the move to the rolling hills of Caledon's country side about six years ago our rare trips to the city have been mainly to visit friends, check in on my home in the city, and medical appointments, without much time to do any exploring. And when we did venture out - especially to enjoy a meal it was to places we both had frequented and knew. But this was about to change.

Having spent most of this past winter's months in the city over seeing the finishing renovations at my Toronto home, Mr. G. and I had the opportunity to really get out and explore. And on a cold snowy day in April stumbled across this little gem on the Danforth, literally minutes from my city home.

We started with some delicious Canadian oysters....

and the most fabulous Canadian 4 cheese board (French friend Victoria would be impressed) I have encountered at at restaurant in a very long time:
Earth Chardonnay Chevre - soft rind goat's cheese that has been washed with earth chardonnay; Upper Canada Comfort Cream - a soft unctuous camembert with a thick bloomy rind and flavours of truffles and an intense buttery palate; Ontario Stilton - sharp and piquant, flavours of slate, made in the English way; Lankaaster - a hard cheese, made in Dutch style. Sharp, salty with crumbly texture.
Now if that was not enough to get our taste buds excited ... the accompaniments were absolutely divine ~ tobacco poached pear, honey walnuts - from their own roof top bee-hives, apricot, and honey and the bread crisps were crunchy and soft at the same time - PERFECTION!!!

My little masterpiece .... did I mention that the honey comes from their own roof top bee-hives? I couldn't stop talking about the honey ... scrumptious.

When going out to eat if we are not taking a taxi ~ Mr. G and I take turns being the designated driver. This time it was moi. Mr. G could not decide on which wine to accompany his dinner ... our waiter quickly solved the challenge with providing a sampling of the trio. The friendly and inviting service we received all evening was second to none...

When my dinner arrived I was beyond excited ... the wellington country filet with herbed Yukon gold frites, arugula pickled mushroom and caramelized onion butter - was grilled to heavenly medium rare.

Mr. G was equally delighted with his - 6 oz. Wellington County Beef, pommes puree, spinach smoked marrow ravioli and Northern Woods mushroom jus.

To complete our extraordinary meal experience Mr. G and I shared a caramelized apple cake - Niagara apple, honey comb toffee crunch and house mascarpone.

Our experience at Globe was amazing ... from the moment we stepped in - to the fabulous service we received and to the mouth watering meal ... there is nothing lacking at this little gem on Danforth. The menu has something for everyone - whether you are looking to enjoy a special evening in their dinning room or kicking back in the wine bar (where we sat) for a full meal or just to enjoy a light meal Globe is it.

If you have not discovered Globe I highly recommend to add to your must try list, especially if you enjoy local seasonal food that has been prepared from scratch. Globe showcases the best that Canada has to offer! their motto "Think global. Eat local" is also their philosophy.

Whether for an intimate dinner with your sweetheart or kicking back with friends you will not be disappointed.

I'm looking forward to catching up with some girlfriend's this summer kicking back with the cheese board, some wine (it will be a taxi afternoon..) , oysters and the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. I understand that Globe offers an amazing week-end brunch ... and look forward to checking it out as well.

Oh and did I mention they make their own honey from their own roof top bee-hives?

You can learn more about Globe by visiting their website, FB page, or on Twitter

Enjoy...
