Being Social & Friendships in the Resilientista Years

The gals of Sex and the City are a great representation of the ease in which friendships are made in our 30s. The opportunities for social outings with other women seemed limitless and friendships were easily made. Why does that seem to change as we get into our late 40s and 50s? Is it age or is it something else?

I pondered this question recently, and thought about my own situation; at first glance it was easy to paint it as an age thing. But with further thought, I believe it's more of a life stage thing, and not being able to make friends after 50 really is a limiting believe. There is no friendship cut off age and as life changes (think geographic moves, divorce or loss of spouse/partner, illness, semi/retirement, empty nester etc.) or, current friends no longer offer the support and encouragement that makes a friendship, many people find themselves needing or wanting to make new friends.

Most notably when I found myself with unexpected free time on my hands and reached out to my gal friends for an impromptu gals nite. While everyone was excited about the idea and so wanted to attend - most already had other commitments for that evening. What I learned is that impromptu may not work the way it once did - as many have spouses, children, grandchildren; others are back in the dating scene or already filling their weekends way ahead of time (one friend in particular is booked every weekend past Labour Day!).

Does this mean that social activities as your life stage changes is limited to mostly family or solo activities? ABSOLUTELY NOT! ~ one only has to click through Instagram to see women in their late 40s, 50s and beyond actively having amazing social lives with their gal (and even male) pals.

Here are 8 ideas to start cultivating new friendships:

1) Step outside your front door: this may seem like a given, but you will not meet new people unless you get out your front door.

2) Give Back : volunteering is a great way to help others, feel a sense of belonging to a community and meeting new people.

3) Make Friends with Yourself : take yourself out on dates, and outings, get to know what you enjoy (and equally important what you don't like) doing. When you are your own friend, you are exuding an air of happiness, confidence, and love; and that will be the friends you will attract.

4) Take a class: It doesn't matter what the class is - so long as it's something you enjoy. You will already have one thing in common with your classmates. So sign up for that pottery, yoga, sewing, spin etc. class.

5) Travel with a Tour Group: If you enjoy travelling but all your friends are busy or you have no one to travel with, don't let that enjoyment go. Travelling with a tour group, offers the feeling of traveling with someone as well as the opportunity to meet new people who may turn into a new friend.

6) Reconnect with Friends: Sometimes friends drift because of life circumstances. If there is a friend you really enjoyed doing things with reach out to them, who knows you may be able to pick up where you left off or may have an amazing new friendship. If it doesn't go beyond the initial contact - that's ok too!

7) Create a Social Routine: Especially if you work from home, are (semi/) retired, that gets you out of the house. Once or twice a week - have coffee at a particular cafe; go for a walk; or meet friends after after work.

8) Use Technology : Whether you find yourself in a new city or your life stage has changed  MeetUp.com  is a great way to meet new people with common interests.

Catching Up With a Friend & Mala Bracelet

we started the afternoon with some bubbly and nibblies at my home before heading out for dinner ...
For those of you who stay connected via Instagram and Facebook - you already know that this past Friday I had a wonderful girls catch up with long time friend Jen.
Jen is not just a friend, she is one of the most creative and intuitive people I know and am blessed to call her friend.

Jen recently started creating a line of handcrafted Wellness bracelets ....

She surprised me with this beautiful Rose Quartz with white Crystal Guru Bead Mala bracelet.

Did I mention how intuitive she is ? ...  she said something drew her to pick this one for me.  Rose Quartz is used in crystal healing to heal and release emotional wounds and traumas. And lately I have been working on releasing these kind of emotions (she had no idea).

Not all people know they should cleanse their precious stone bracelet before wearing. With each of her handcrafted pieces Jen includes her signature sage bag and additional instructions for energetically cleansing your bracelet.

Look how gorgeous it looks!!!

Love ... it all starts with self-love!!!

Thank you Jen for this beautiful gift and your friendship. AND as a SPECIAL SURPRISE for High Heeled Life readers, Jen has offered to sponsor a give-away - and one lucky HHL reader will get a chance to win their own special handcrafted Wellness bracelet. Be sure you are following along so you don't miss the give-away post when it goes up in a few weeks!!

And if you can't wait for the give-away post to get your own Wellness bracelet, you can visit her FaceBook Page  for more jewelry information and details to purchase on-line.

You are the curator of your life so make it luxurious,

Planning a Special Tea Party

With the swirling wind, freezing rain and just plain ugly cold outside ~
Inside with a cup of hot tea is the perfect place to be.
Surrounded by books on tea ... and tea parties!!

Tea is extraordinary ... in how it brings people together.
I'm planning a very special tea, and can't wait to share more with you in future posts.

Some fresh fruit , Almond Roca - butter crunch toffee with chocolate and almonds...

These market tulips are perfect for a touch of spring on such a gloomy day.

No tiny teacup today, instead a solid Lenox  (a gift from my dear friend Nan)  "tea"mug is perfect to hold Original Chai by Pukka. A blend of organic black tea gently spiced with cinnamon, cardamom and ginger.
This pillow sits on our sofa and is one of my favourites.
Looking at it's inscription and thinking of all the blessings we have in our friendships and family (as they can be friends too!) always warms my soul.

Tea with Elizabeth and Lady Carlye

My dear friend Elizabeth, who spent the last 3 months of 2011 and the better part of 2012 traveling the world, finally returned home. After coordinating our schedules we were able to catch up in late summer over a cup of tea and some yummy treats. The weather was extremely hot so, we sat comfortably inside looking out  to the gardens. Come along and join us for tea...

I had not seen Elizabeth since our trip to Paris in October 2011 ~ at the end of our week in Paris, I flew home, while Elizabeth went off to see the world.
During our time in Paris,  Elizabeth introduced me to Mariage Frères Maison de Thé  (definitely a must go to - when you are in Paris). To celebrate her return home I decided Casablanca tea from Mariage Frères would be perfect! served in my Lady Carlyle teapot by Royal Albert,

For the desserts I choose this hand painted robin egg blue pedestal plate, Porcelain de France.

A Box of Teacups and Friendship

It is amazing how our Angels sometimes deliver their messages. Though I do write about my accident, I do like to keep things positive here. So when life is a bit of a 45 , I tend to retract and take a little break, rather than write about the aches, pains, and challenges of the moment. During my recent break, I was questioning whether my writing makes a difference to others.

As I'm going through this break and questioning I receive a package from a dear blog friend...who let's me know that my posts on tea - and taking the time to actually enjoy a cup of tea, have encouraged her to do that for herself. This made my day! But , she also wanted to pass along some teacups that she had ~ which she felt I would enjoy. To say that I was humbled by this gesture, would be an understatement.

When this HUGE box arrived ... I was speechless!

Inside you could see how much thoughtfulness and care each item had been packed with.

These are some of the teacups and goodies (lots of fragrance samples to try and strawberry chocolate tea) that I will certainly treasure these teacups of friendship. Each time I use one, I will be reminded that I did make a difference, and that I must continue.

Well, if one box was not enough ... a second box arrived a few days later.
With more lovelies and tea... over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you the beauty of these teacups.

My Dear friend N. you inspire me more than you will know, to give back to others and to keep the faith ~ HE really does have a plan for us all. To enjoying a cup of tea together, in heart and spirit. Hugs, C.

If you have not yet discovered The LBD Diaries blog I highly suggest you do. You will discover a blog author whose writing is inspiring, reminding us that no matter what twists and turns life takes us, we are still women. To always have faith and believe that God is right by our side, and when you are ready he will bring into your life more joy, love and happiness than we can imagine. She writes about her journey to getting back into her LBDs ~ and her Alpha Hubby who is truly her soul mate. You can read a little more about this witty, and special woman HERE. Pop on over and say hello, you will be happy you did.

Good Friends, Good Food = Great Memories

Sometimes we get so rolled up in all the things that we have to do in life that we forget to do the one most important thing ~ LIVE IT  and really savour the small moments ~ like a meal with a friend. Neither the setting nor the meal needs to be fancy, the important thing is that you take some time to just DO IT!

Well, that's just what one of my Besties and I did. We decided some friend time was long over due. With help from our Home Assistant I prepare some nibbling foods and of course  tea, for this impromptu luncheon.

We set the table with a pink, white, and hint of green tablecloth and added some potted purple market tulips in a pale blue decorative ceramic pot, to remind us spring is here.

The colour pallet was kept soft, again to keep spring in the air...

The napkins were a tribute to our rose garden planted last summer. A golden tortoise shell napkin ring giving   homage to the earth, that grows our lovely flowers, was used.

The china is Limoges from France in a delightful sprinkling of bluish and pink flowers...

There was plenty of food ... seafood finger nibblies, salad. Bestie  brought some onion buns,Asian custard tarts (YUMMY) and strawberries.

Mr. G captured the moment... and we went about enjoying a couple hours of catching up and enjoying spending time together. Of course this is my Foodie & Travel Bestie, so lots of talk on food and travel.

We finished our meal and lingered in planning our next girl's travel escape, over a wonderful cup of tea. The tea served in my Lady Carlyle by Royal Albert teapot and teacups is from Mariage Frères, which I brought back from my Paris trip in October 2011.
Pink and white roses from my Bestie!!!

When was the last time you enjoy a simple meal with a Bestie for no reason?
