Relationships & What I've Learned at 50

1) All relationships have an expiry date, and too often we remain in a relationship hoping "the person" will change their spots, despite how many times they let us down.

2) When a relationship has come to an end no matter how long it may not have been good - you still need to take time to heal, reconnect with yourself and recharge yourself. Jumping into another relationship will only provide a band-aid solution and you may find yourself in the same predicament in the months, years to come.

3) If someone's actions threaten your well being - be it health, financial, emotional or physical well-being;while your heart may want to give them an opportunity to make things better, it's also important to set a time limit for things to be rectified. Let the person know ... and then do not cave! Walk away. If you let them know how something is making you feel and they don't take steps to make you feel secure - then they are being about them self only - and have no interest in comprise (or your feelings).

4) If someone is not happy with your reaction to their original action, that you brought to their attention - and goes on to further break your trust and blames you because of the reaction ! RUN!! as much as your heart may not have caught up with your head. KNOW it takes two to make things work or not - if he takes no responsibility for his part, know he has given you a gift of freedom, even if it's rocking your very essence and being to the core and it hurts like hell!

5) Each relationship teaches us something - if we take the time to reflect and identify the lessons. Knowing the lessons will better equip us to apply them in future relationships, thus breaking the cycle and not having to relearn the lesson.

6) Forgiveness is key to moving forward. Forgive for your own well being - even if you don't tell the other person you forgive them. Try this mantra "I let go, and forgive him" - keep repeating it until it's true.

7) A man will always tell you who he really is. If he says "you are too good for him", "he is a bad boy" BELIEVE him. This was something a good friend's mother once told us - while I have never forgotten this - I may not always have put her very wise words to practice.

8) Relationships are hard work and I do believe that almost everything can be worked out. But if the person you are with has not worked out his relationship with himself - don't expect things to be smooth sailing.

9) The early days, weeks, months and even years may run smoothly, after all it's shiny new. Even if its built on the ruins of the past relationship. But in time cracks will appear. Until each person has dealt with their pain of a past relationship and has a healthy relationship with them self - they cannot truly have a healthy relationship with another.

10) Even healthy relationships can come to an end. The difference is though some things may not have worked - RESPECT and LOVE has always been present. You both cared enough to recognize you may not work as a couple, and that's OK .... but you are able to maintain a friendship.

“The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.” — Carrie Bradshaw

What relationship lessons have you learned?
Would love for you to add to the above in the comments.

Monthly Bits & Bites ~ March 2017

While it was actually on February 28th, (pancake Tuesday), my search for pancakes took me to
this delightful place called Old School Toronto.

If you follow along on Instagram, you will recognize the name Trattoria Nervosa, it's one of my fav places to eat. I've wrote about my introduction to this great eatery here, In March I had the opportunity to catch up with a business colleague/friend and enjoy a light lunch.
What better way to enjoy the evening on International Women's Day, than with a group of fabulous women who are taking their personal financial security seriously and thanks to RBC Global Asset Management we learned it's never too late to get started.
Tutti Pizza!! was delighted to discover the Yorkville location is re-opened!
Attended a talk at Verity hosted by my friend Susan Sommers, on the importance of fitness. She did her first marathon in her 60s!! Recently launched her second book Love Your Body, Embrace Your Life and though I've heard her speak many times, each time I walk away inspired and motivated.
I have been wanting to invest in a Nespresso machine for some time ...
and on a recent trip to Canadian Tire found it on sale!! in red ...
The flower shops on Avenue Road - always offer up some beautiful blooms, year round to brighten your day! Though I shop all ... I often find myself popping in to Jong Young Flower Market, where one weekend in March I discovered this amazing commercial mum!!
Strolling through the Loblaws close to my home, and discovering they are not only one of the locations authorized to sell wine - but that they stock my fav bubbly!! Now that made my March!

What made your March?

The week on Resilientista Musings No. 2

In my post Make Space For the Life You Want - by Decluttering & Simplifying the Life You Have I wrote about how clutter is more than the stuff that fills your home, it's really anything that affects you physically and emotionally - stopping you from living the life you want. How many times have you said to your self "If only I lived in a bigger house/condo; had a bigger closet, bathroom (fill in the blank) - I would be able to get myself organized"? The truth is it's not that you necessarily need more space it's that you need to take a look at all the stuff that you no longer use but is taking up valuable real estate in your home and clear it out! Clutter creates stagnant energy, which blocks you from bring what you truly desire into your life. read more here

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP WARM AT BEDTIME WITHOUT TURNING UP THE HEAT ...

Many of the email questions I receive are about "how to manage on a tight budget?", so with the temperatures starting to dip outside, I thought it would be a good time to share my tips for staying warm at bedtime without turning up the heat. read more here

Gathering with Family and Friends: With today's busy schedules time to gather with family and friends is slowly becoming more of a challenge. Thanksgiving is a time to disconnect from technology (even if only for a few hours - trust me the world will not end if you don't see the latest Instagram post) and rec-connect with loved ones. Time is precious ... read more here

5 Simple Self Care Tips
 for Transitioning into Autumn

Time to reflect, set intentions
Have you reviewed your goals and wishes for this year? (most people don’t after setting them). Take this transitional season to reflect on your life, review your goals (update if needed) and set new goals. Ask yourself - How is life working for me at the moment? What changes may be needed? What do I want to create next?  Am I making myself a priority in my life? Set aside 30 – 60 minutes to reflect on your life as it is now –  then select a few simple action steps you can start taking towards achieving your goals and creating the life you want to be living. read more here

Have You Laughed Today?

When life's "stuff" happens - divorce, car accident, loss of a loved one, illness, career downsizing, etc. - it can leave us frustrated, overwhelmed and stressed - depleting our ability to find joy in everyday life and laugh. But , laughter just may be what you need to stay healthy and improve your ability to cope during challenging times. read more here

Time for a Fresh Start …

After almost five years of writing content on High Heeled Life (formerly Falling Off a High Heeled  Life) and struggling back and forth over the past couple years with the direction the HHL blog would take, and whether to stop writing on HHL and start fresh, or whether to just stop blogging,  I have made a decision.
