The Meaning of Christmas ~ Part One

This time of the year has always been thrilling time for me; the parties to attend and host; the beautiful window displays at Holt's; Santa Claus parade; skating at Nathan Phillips Square; hot chocolate;my birthday celebrationS ... yes with being born 6 days before Christmas ... one took advantage of the WHOLE month and celebrated! Christmas for me also meant lots of wonderful packages to wrap and open.

The past Christmas post accident have been much more low key and this year as I look back its amazing, though I knew the meaning  of Christmas, how easily the commercialization had taken hold. Things that should have held special meaning were really everyday occurrence and had lost much of the lustre they should have held. Celebration was the main event, but really what were we celebrating???

This year more than ever I'm feeling something is missing. Don't get me wrong a little blue box in my stocking would certainly be welcomed... but I want more!!!

Have you found over the years, that the simple meaning of Christmas has been tucked away at the back of a closet collecting dust?

  1. Hi! I believe that is so true and that we all need to remind us what the true meaning of Christmas really is.

And I'm so glad to be back from my blog break and to enjoy every enchanting day of December! Have a lovely weekend!

  3. Hi Celia,

I've been sharing that this Christmas is more meaningful to me. Like you, I too was born in December. I appreciate the gift of life given to me and the grace by which I live. I want so much, that my life have meaning; that I'm not defined by empty gestures of gratification.

-- I would like to think that I've remembered the reason to celebrate Christmas, but I have to admit this year is far different than the past. I have joy. Not the emotional response that passes away over time, but a sense of gladness and gratitude to God for the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.

    Blessings and peace.

And yes, this time of year is something that lasts ALL YEAR as MTJ says above. THe fun of family and friends is something to celebrate with MUCH JOY AND FEASTING, and the overwhelming joy of CHrist is something that can last even through the rough times. YEAHHHHH! ANITA

  6. More? for me...I got it. Him. He is my more. He is my blue box...and pink one and flowered one. He broke the chains that wouldn't let me go free. He did what nothing else could do. Things come and go...but Him living in my heart...running with me...always in my corner....aaahhh. I'm good.

  13. Hey High Heeled,

I agree -- Christmas was exciting as a kid, but it has lost its lustre as an adult for a few reasons:
    * You can now afford to buy things you want rather than waiting to receive them as presents
    * It's no longer new
    * You have more responsibilities
    * You stop watching movies, school plays etc that reinforce the meaning of the holiday for you.

I've been trying to bring back the childlike wonderment this year. There's a lot to love about Christmas and it's such an opportunity to have fun and spread cheer.

Hope you have a great holiday season.

    xx

  14. Hi my friend, so sorry I have been missing all of your great posts lately...I agree with you, to me I think the best thing more than any gift is to share it with my family ~ we have all had a trying year in many different aspects, but we will all come together from many spots on the continent, with my Grandmother who is 89...so dinner together is worth more than any gift under the tree
How wonderful your birthday is coming soon!

  16. sometimes, i think our heart yearns for
the Christmases when we were children.
we want to be undone by the wonder
    of the miracle again.

i saw your comment at sarah's, and i
am praying for a Christmas babe of
    your own . . .

  18. Sometimes we look back at Christmases past with a lot of nostalgia. I know I do. When I get to thinking about past Christmases and the friends and relatives who are no longer on this earth to celebrate with, I try to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. I truly believe that the important thing is to have a relationship with the one whose birthday we celebrate and look forward to his second coming.
I hope you have a wonderful birthday AND Christmas this year.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  23. 1. happy birthday month, sweet girl!!
    2. i do feel that the true meaning of christmas gets lost absolutely every year. i think it's because department stores, commercials, and advertising start getting us ready right after halloween. i need to be THANKFUL on thanksgiving first, before moving into the holiday season!
    3. we always make a point of watching "it's a wonderful life" -- this put everyone in the TRUE holiday mood!

  25. I knew I liked you! I am a December birthday too; the 10th. And today is my husband's birthday. I find that I am more grateful and when I am more grateful for every little thing I am less cranky and more aware of what is really important...about anything.
    Best,
    Colleen
