Say NO to DIEting & YES to LifeStyle Eating

I have never been a fan of the word "DIEt", perhaps its the small~big word that makes it up or the word it spells if one should accidentally forget the "t" at the end. This so called "DIEt" thing comes with many restrictions and in case no one has ever told you, life can be short lived, so why would you want to deprive yourself the odd glass of wine?

After I finally started being able to wear (or on some days remembering to wear ~ [post or another day] ) regular clothes, the cold~ harsh reality that the scale was not broken and that I had indeed gained 20-25 lbs post accident smacked me right in the zipper and buttons not wanting to close. Its amazing the truth a pair of Juicy Couture sweat pants or Lulu Lemon yoga pants can conceal.

My health care team tried to comfort me by explaining the Meds I need to take really play havoc with one's system and ability to quickly put on weight. This only being part of the challenge ~ I started to look at what  was eating, It was all fairly healthy, or so I thought. In any case not wanting to give in and "DIEt", I needed someone to examine the situation. Enter my knew best friend the Nutritionist.  After our initial meetings, she prepared a plan for eating that would represent foods I was already consuming, only with better choices and a couple of new introductions.

I was already eating oatmeal, yogurt, nutritional cold cereal and bread.
But my choices were not helping my bottom line.

The above items are made from natural ingredients, which offer many health benefits. Take a look at how many ingredients the yogurt or oatmeal you consume contains? You will be surprised...

New discoveries...

Coconut water, Flax seed, Ryevita and Almond milk were the only new things
which were not part of my everyday eating.

Actual foods I eat...

A Sample Day of eating for HHL
Start each day with hot water, squeeze of lemon,1/2 tsp raw honey and grated ginger
Breakfast
1/2 cup cooked oatmeal, add 1/2 tsp raw honey, cinnamon for flavour (optional)
1 scoop protein powder (mix into oatmeal or have with water) OR have small handful nuts
1 tsp ground flax seed sprinkled on top

Snack
4oz yogurt (plain, with active cultures)
1/2 cup berries
1/2 tsp agave nectar or raw honey to sweeten (optional)

Lunch
3-4oz grilled chicken
large green salad OR minestrone soup
1/2 Tbsp. olive oil with lemon and sea salt
Ryevita Crisps (1 serving)

Snack
7-10 whole almonds
1/2 large or 1 small apple (Granny Smith are best)
Coconut water is a great substitute for coffee, as is herbal tea.
If you don't feel like food for a snack - try these ideas instead.

Dinner
3-4oz meat (lamb,chicken,pork or veal)
Steamed broccoli or other green vegetables (1 cup)
Salad (2 cups) -optional , especially if you had salad for lunch.
1-2 Tbsp. olive oil dressing (oil, apple cider vinegar, sea salt, pepper)

I know you are wanting to know... after a week how did I feel. Overall, I did not feel hungry between meals (often not having a snack or only part of the suggested snack ). Mr. G was happy that he had a plan to follow for meal preparation for me (this made things quite pleasant around meal time ~ instead of the "I don't know what I want, make what you want" followed by pasta again??? and the usual discussion of .......between couples). I know ! I know! Ok the scale went down 3 lbs.

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing additional discoveries and insight to a healthier way of LifeStyle eating. Meals are based on the Mediterranean style of eating ~ which was my choice.

  6. Sounds good! i am curious how coconut milk takes coffee's place. I am a huge fan of juicing, and just recently found out that you can freeze vegetable juice right after making it and it will keep it's fresh enzymes which are so key. So now I make a big batch on Sundays for the week, and have it every day instead of the 2 maybe 3 times when I would have time. I really love Dr. Sandra Cabot, the "Liver Doctor" and have followed her for years, if you are curious and looking for more.

  7. I agree diets so not work. Just like yoga is a way of life eating habits are also a way of life. Moderation and sensible habits are needed

  8. I don't diet either. The main problem I have is eating properly when I'm alone at home. I don't like cooking for one so I don't. And I wander around the kitchen, not knowing what to eat, so I don't eat anything until I finally have to and I reach for junk food. It's really quite pathetic! This is why I go out a lot!!

  9. I'd love to visit a nutritionist but never find the time to. Your menu looks great and doesn't look like a huge sacrifice. I just found you on SITS and I am now following you. I'm loving always meeting new friends:)
And don't forget to stop by today because we continue with our Show Yo' Flow Campaign, and you don't want to miss the interview we have on Jessica and the amazing surprises she has for our readers:) See you there! Happy Wednesday!

  10. Thanks Honey for posting your daily consumption! I may have to try this. I am with you, it's a "lifestyle" not diet!

I am all about the Flaxseed, although last time I went to get some, they didn't have "ground" so I got "meal" FYI seems to work in the recipes just as well. ASnd the Ryevita.....they taste like cardboard {to me} but add some Nautrally Yours Peanut Better and you can't eat enough!!

I have been wanting to try Coconut Water. Everytime I see it, I turn my head, lol. I just couldn't imagine it being "good" but have read how "good for you" it is. I will get some today, just because you mentioned it!!

Thanks for sharing and hope your day is awesome!
    XO

  12. My dear HHL I'm so glad I read your post today. I put away the family sized bar of chocolate I was going to have for luch and got some fruit instead with bio active yoghurt. You are my new nutritionist. Each time I get a bad craving I'll run over and see what you are doing. I'm okay at breakfast though. I've got that covered for the next twenty two months. (My post will reveal all)
Keep up the good effort. XX

  16. Good for you! I was feeling good the last couple of days having eaten more healthfully, but had a major chocolate meltdown today - OK, it was yesterday too. But, I will not diet anymore either. Have you read "Women, Food & God" by Geneen Roth? A worthwhile book.
    Best,

  17. weight management! my greatest bane. Found that jogging helps a lot though. even more than trying to control what i eat, since I don't succeed much in that aspect.

  18. It is amazing how in the end, calories make such a difference. I should try adding coconut water to my diet. I have the worst time trying to get in enough water to drink. It's not that I hate the "taste;" water just feels so heavy to me, both going down while I'm drinking it & once it's settled in my belly.

Do read the Fountainhead first if you decide to read some Rand! I jumped into the big, deep novel first - & it's amazing, as well - but the Fountainhead resonates more in the heart, while Atlas Shrugged resonates more in the mind. =)

  19. I have just recently heard of coconut water & I can't wait to try it. I agree with you about the diet thing. Good food choices & portion control are key.

Baby Girl got her little something in the mail from Dolce & loved it! The stickers & notepad were a hit & we hung Dolce's picture on the bulletin board in her room. Thank you so much for being so sweet to my baby! Much love.

  20. UGH. This is a great post. The scale has not been on my side these days. The medicine issue is a problem and weight gain as a side effect is very real (says the one who cried as I tried to squeeze into fat jeans this morning ...). This motivated me to head out and buy some running shoes (the first step).

  23. I needed this! Being less active, I too have added a few extra pounds to my already ample backside! Why does it all go to my butt? LOL

Sounds like you've got a healthy plan going for you...I'm sure your going to be more fabulous than you already are!

  24. Weight gain cannot be helped if it is a medical problem. If it is just not pushing away from the table is different. I am sure with all you have been through, I few pounds gained will be a piece of cake.
